School of Choice Application Process for 2015-16 Begins January 5
Parents looking to move a child from one OUSD school site to another for the 2015-16 school year can begin applying for the district’s School of Choice (SOC) option beginning January 5, 2015. The deadline to file the application is Tuesday, March 31 at 3:30 p.m.
Click School of Choice for specific details on the application process, and to view a list of schools classified as “capped” due to enrollment capacity. For more information, please call the OUSD Student Services Department at 760-966-7802.
Interdistrict Transfer Requests for 2015-16 School Year
Requests to transfer students to schools located inside or outside the OUSD zoned boundaries will be accepted beginning January 5, 2015. Interdistrict application forms are available at the OUSD Education Support Services Office, 2080 Mission Ave. The office is open 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Board of Education amended administrative regulation 5113(a). The policy now reads, "Absences must be cleared within 5 school days after the student returns to school."
If absences are not cleared within 5 days, they will be considered unexcused.

Foods and beverages sold to students through the district’s child nutrition program, student stores, vending machines and fundraisers meet or exceed state and federal nutrition standards. Nutrition education is provided as a part of the district’s health education program.

We will play a five week schedule with 8 on 8 teams. All teams will be involved in a playoff at seasons end, with a champion being crowned. The number of teams will determine the number of games played. Let's have some fun!

PLANET AID - DONATE YOUR CLOTHES & SHOES!
In the next few days there will be a yellow bin outside of Student Services. This bin is sponsored by Planet Aid. Gently used clothes and shoes can be donated to this bin. Planet Aid sponsors the bin and the clothes that are donated are used to pay for education/ teachers in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The donations are also used to feed and clothe these poverty stricken countries. The other awesome thing about the bin is that every pound of clothes donated earns 2 cents for PLUS (Peer Leaders Uniting Students), a leadership group on campus. When you are cleaning out your closet, remember the yellow Planet Aid bin and DONATE!

A new ParentLink App for smart phones is now available to OUSD parents. The App aims to provide and improve all avenues of district and student communication and information for parents. Watch the video below.
ParentLink’s easy-to-use App provides emergency messaging, custom messages and language translation. Parents can now get OUSD information when they need it.

Once a month, on the second Wednesday, from 9:00 - 10:30 am, the principal, Mrs. Morgan, will host 5 interested parents to have coffee with! During the visit, parents will have the opportunity to get up close and personal with the amazing work that happens here at Chavez Middle School. This is a great time to visit classrooms, explore our facilities, and most importantly, see what your child experiences every day.

Attention 6th Grade Parents!
Attention 6th grade parents… By California law all incoming 7th graders are required to show definitive proof of immunization (TDAP) before they can enroll in 7th grade. This shot must have been given after age 7. Your incoming 7th grader will not allowed to start the 2015-16 school without proof. Some students may have already got the shot, but have not shown the proof to the Health Office. Please have your 6th grader present their updated immunization record to the Health Office before the end of this school year. If your student has not received the TDAP yet, please make an appointment NOW to get it. This way you will prevent your student from being excluded from school in August. Certificated Employee of the Year
Rachel Chambers has been selected to represent Chavez as the Certificated Staff of the Year. We would like to thank her for her love of students, commitment to their success in middle school and high school, and for the relationships she forms with the students. Her countless hours spent overseeing and implementing our AVID and Road to College programs is to be commended as well as all the other behind-the-scenes acts of kindness and support she does for the many students who call on her for letters of recommendation and advice for college and scholarship opportunities. Great job Rachel!
Classified Employee of the Year
Yolanda Velasco has been to represent Chavez as the Classified Staff of the Year. We would like to thank her for her absolute and total commitment to our families and school. Beyond being a support to our students in their classes, she commits countless hours to helping out with just about anything we call on her for! She assists students in Opportunity Program, translates for IEPs, and has helped out in various roles in the office when needed. Her many years working with families in this area of Oceanside is both appreciated and valued. Great job Yolanda!

OUSD Policy on Bullying, Harassment and Discrimination
The local educational agency (LEA) adopted a policy that prohibits discrimination, harassment, intimidation, and bullying based on actual or perceived ancestry, age, color, disability, gender, gender identity, gender expression, nationality, race or ethnicity, religion, sex, sexual orientation, or association with a person or a group with one or more of these actual or perceived characteristics.

Parents can register their children online for the 2014-15 OUSD school lunch and breakfast programs. The national program provides meals at a reduced cost; eligible students with an approved free or reduced status may receive meals at no cost. Click Online Meal Registration to get started.
