Open Enrollment School of Choice (SOC) For the 2016-17 School Year Green Zone: January 4, 2016 – March 31, 2016

The Oceanside Unified School District Board of Education maintains its commitment to provide educational choices to families to meet the diverse needs of all students. The district’s Open Enrollment School of Choice (SOC) Policy (5116.1) is regulated by space availability.

The following schools are capped for the 2016-17 school year due to enrollment being at capacity:  El Camino High School, King Middle School, Ivey Ranch and Foussat Elementary Schools.  Only those applicants eligible for priority “C” (sibling), “D” (feeder pattern), or “E” (parent/guardian is an OUSD employee at requested site) will be allowed to apply for these capped schools.

Green Zone applications will only be available at the Educational Support Services Office at 2080 Mission Ave in Oceanside.

  • If your child is currently on a SOC and will remain at the same school next year—there is no need to reapply.
  • If your child is currently in entering kindergarten, 6th or 9th grade, you need to apply for a SOC for the 2016-17 school year if you want your child to attend a school other than their school of residence.
  • Only applications received during Green Zone will be considered in the first round lottery process for School of Choice placement.  This is not a first come, first served arrangement… all applications date stamped within Green Zone are given the same consideration within their priority categories.
  • NO e-mails or faxes will be accepted.
  • Two forms of address verification must be presented with the application. Acceptable proofs of address are current utility bills, cable bill, rental agreement or mortgage statement.  If these forms of verification are not in your name, a completed Shared Residency form will be required.
  • Parents will be notified by the last school day in May through U.S. Mail that their application has been approved, denied, or placed on a wait list.  Please do not call to check on the progress of your application before that time, as answering these calls takes away from our time to process applications.
  • Transportation is not provided for any student approved for School Of Choice.

For questions or concerns regarding SOC, please contact:

Girl's Annual STEM Conference @ Mira Costa College

Reverse Order.png

Our Chavez students received a nice visit from Reverse Order, who is a national touring Pop/Rock band. They've headlined many events, they were a finalist on Americas Got Talent and had a Grammy nominated single (Go).  Reverse The Trend is an Anti-Bullying concert and assembly created by the young band Reverse Order to help combat the rise of bullying across America. [Reverse The Trend is 501(c)(3) pending] The band starts the program by performing a few songs to excite and engage the students using popular music that all will enjoy. We found the concert increases their interest and attentiveness. Reverse Order continues the assembly by sharing their individual stories of how they were bullied, and how they overcame it in a safe and productive way. Students are often shocked to hear that even “celebrities” are bullied and it’s comforting for them to know that they are not alone, and they too can overcome and accomplish great things in their own lives.

Cesar Chavez

Mexican-American Cesar Chavez (1927-1993) was a prominent union leader and labor organizer. Hardened by his early experience as a migrant worker, Chavez founded the National Farm Workers Association in 1962. His union joined with the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee in its first strike against grape growers in California, and the two organizations later merged to become the United Farm Workers. Stressing nonviolent methods, Chavez drew attention for his causes via boycotts, marches and hunger strikes. Despite conflicts with the Teamsters union and legal barriers, he was able to secure raises and improve conditions for farm workers in California, Texas, Arizona and Florida.

The Oceanside Unified School District will be providing free breakfast and lunch to all children ages 1 - 18 years old. Please see the FREE MEALS flyer below in the NEWS tab for dates/times/locations. Have a wonderful summer!

Nice work, Katie and her students from per. 3 and 4! For working with arborists today to replace about 11 trees in the front of the school.  There was lots of stomping down of dirt, hands in the dirt, a little of digging, and hauling of trees by Katie.  The trees look beautiful!

Thank you, 6th grade team, JoAnita, and counselors! For staying Thursday night to greet and welcome our incoming sixth grade parents.  Thank you to ASB for leading them on tours and answering their questions!

Thank you, ASB! For the Friday goodies they delivered to teachers in honor of all they do.

Thank you, Rachel! For accompanying students to the 8th gr. Genentech Open House Thursday evening at Genentech.

Thank you, Michela! For also encouraging students to sign up and facilitating them going!!  We had 30 8th graders and their parent go to Genentech to hear about careers at Genentech and listen to programs available at MiraCosta for degrees in the biotech industry.  Students also got a tour of the facility!

Thank you, Kelly!  For running this semester’s Road to College program. Students toured Cal State San Marcos today.  Thank you to Isabelle for helping chaperone the trip as well.

Southern Freshman Director Finalist

Southern Freshman Director Finalist

Congratulations to Kalani Hardyway for being chosen as the Southern Freshman Director! Kalani is an amazing student leader here at Cesar Chavez Middle School. She has put herself out there for a highly sought after position on the CASL State Board as Southern Freshman Director. This is her third year as an Associated Student Body Leader. Kalani submitted her application to run for the position along with numerous other student leaders from around the state; her application packet stood out amongst all other shining stars we call student leaders. Kalani was one of six finalists campaigning and spoke in front of hundreds and maybe even a thousand student leaders from across the southern part of California. We are proud of you Kalani!

Coffee with the Principal

Once a month, on the second Wednesday, from 9:00 - 10:30 am, the principal, Mrs. Morgan, will host 5 interested parents to have coffee with! During the visit, parents will have the opportunity to get up close and personal with the amazing work that happens here at Chavez Middle School.  This is a great time to visit classrooms, explore our facilities, and most importantly, see what your child experiences every day.
