8th Grade Promotion and End-of-Year Activities Expectations
Dear Parents and Eighth Grade Students,
This year is quickly flying by and believe it or not, we have already begun planning the end of the year activities for our eighth grade students. As we head into spring, we are reminded that the end of the school year will be here before we know it! This is especially exciting for our eighth graders as they prepare to move into high school.
For many of our students, we find that during this time of the school year, they start to lose interest in schoolwork and increase their interest in socialization. However, it is our expectation that all students continue to follow the district, school, and classroom policies that were set forth at the beginning of this school year and reinforced throughout.
2nd Semester 12 week Progress Report grades will be used to determine whether students will be eligible to participate in these fun and exciting end-of-year activities. This grading period will end on Friday, April 11th so it is imperative that 8th graders really ensure they are focused on grades and behavior for the remainder of the school year. Students who do not meet the criteria will not be allowed to attend promotion or end of the year events. Letters with this information were sent home at the start of this semester for parent signature. For a copy of the letter in English and Spanish, click HERE. This letter outlines the criteria that have been established for the Yearbook signing party, Boomer’s Fieldtrip, and promotion. It is important that EVERYONE understand what our expectations are. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us at 760-966-4900.

Common Core Parent Information
California is one of 45 states nationwide to adopt the new Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in English/Language Arts and mathematics. This shift in teaching has been characterized by some as “the most significant change to classroom instruction since 1998,” when California first adopted its own academic standards. Click the Common Core link above to learn more about the standards and how the Oceanside Unified School District is implementing Common Core in the classroom.
