Mexican-American Cesar Chavez (1927-1993) was a prominent union leader and labor organizer. Hardened by his early experience as a migrant worker, Chavez founded the National Farm Workers Association in 1962. His union joined with the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee in its first strike against grape growers in California, and the two organizations later merged to become the United Farm Workers. Stressing nonviolent methods, Chavez drew attention for his causes via boycotts, marches and hunger strikes. Despite conflicts with the Teamsters union and legal barriers, he was able to secure raises and improve conditions for farm workers in California, Texas, Arizona and Florida.

Student Book Club gets going! Ms. Sweet in the library has started our first round of book club this month. Students elected to read “Between Shades of Gray”, a harrowing account of the forcible relocation of countless Lithuanians in the wake of the Russian invasion of their country in 1939. In the case of 16-year-old Lina, her mother, and her younger brother, this means deportation to a forced-labor camp in Siberia.
Thank you, scoring teams! For taking time out of your classrooms to read and score the many literacy benchmarks for your grade level.
Thank you, Coach Howard! For bringing everyone together during lunch this week to celebrate Thanksgiving with a great meal!
Good luck, Ms. Washburn and our Chavez Chorus! They will be traveling to KUSI studios on the Monday we return from break to record their singing performance for KUSI’s holiday program. J
